Tap is both a style of dance and a form of music. Unlike most other forms of dance, tap dancers add their own contribution to the music of the dance with their own percussion – their tap shoes, which have special metal “taps” to make the characteristic sounds associated with the dance.
Tap dancing is derived from much older forms of dance, however, in its current form, is thought to have originated in the 1800s as part of traveling shows.
Tap dance is a fun and exciting way for beginners to follow in the footsteps of some of America’s most beloved dancers, including Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. It can be performed with any style of music.
